Let People Judge Your Poetry
by Omobolanle Alashe
Let people judge your poetry, it is the actualization of stories untold
And dreams yet to unfold.
Even if it’s the very fibre of your being
Ripped apart,
Pieced together
By punctuation and worded art.
Even if it’s your sadness and your joy, your tears and smiles
Let people judge your art.
Let them see the you for who you really are,
Your darkness and your good parts.
Let people realize you’re a piece of work
And your poetry’s a piece of work.
Let people know the castles you’ve built and watched crumble away
The stars you’ve counted, you going astray,
Let people see the bigness and the littleness, the highs and lows.
Let them see your growth, regression.
Let them hear, let them know
That what you are right now
Is 19 years of confusion
And love and dark thoughts,
And songs and smiles
Let them feel the truth that your truth hurts
Let them see the miles and miles and miles
You still have to go
You’re a piece of work, yes
But you’re still a work in progress
I think they should know.
And dreams yet to unfold.
Even if it’s the very fibre of your being
Ripped apart,
Pieced together
By punctuation and worded art.
Even if it’s your sadness and your joy, your tears and smiles
Let people judge your art.
Let them see the you for who you really are,
Your darkness and your good parts.
Let people realize you’re a piece of work
And your poetry’s a piece of work.
Let people know the castles you’ve built and watched crumble away
The stars you’ve counted, you going astray,
Let people see the bigness and the littleness, the highs and lows.
Let them see your growth, regression.
Let them hear, let them know
That what you are right now
Is 19 years of confusion
And love and dark thoughts,
And songs and smiles
Let them feel the truth that your truth hurts
Let them see the miles and miles and miles
You still have to go
You’re a piece of work, yes
But you’re still a work in progress
I think they should know.
